AMU Inaugurates GIAN Programme on Post-Colonialism and Global International Relations
Aligarh, July 26: The Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) inaugurated a five-day Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) programme on “Post-Colonialism and Global International Relations” at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC) today. The workshop, aimed at re-examining international relations from a non-Western lens, brings together scholars and students for critical engagement with global political discourses.
Presiding over the inaugural session, AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon appreciated the vital and timely theme. “This course is an important step towards decolonizing the study of international relations. We must cultivate and promote non-Western perspectives that reflect the lived realities of the Global South,” she said. “I commend the Department of Political Science for its initiative in hosting a globally significant scholar and promoting academic introspection.”
The course's international resource person, Prof. Amitav Acharya, Distinguished Professor of International Relations at American University, Washington D.C., is a leading voice in Global IR and post-colonial studies. His sessions will cover topics ranging from alternative frameworks of world order to the intellectual contributions of non-Western societies.
Prof. Ikram Hussain, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, remarked, “We are privileged to have Prof. Acharya guiding this discourse. His scholarship represents the transformative shift in global academic thinking.”
Prof. M. Nafis Ansari, Chairman, Department of Political Science, emphasized the academic value of moving beyond Eurocentric paradigms. “The programme allows young scholars to think critically and construct alternative narratives in global affairs,” he noted.
Prof. Jehangir Warsi, Local GIAN Coordinator, highlighted the institutional support behind the initiative, stating, “GIAN is a powerful platform that enables Indian institutions to connect with global academic excellence.”
The course is being coordinated by Dr. Rahat Hasan and Prof. Asmer Beg, Department of Political Science, AMU.
