A Heated Dispute Unfolds
In an unexpected turn of events, tensions erupted during a horse show at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) when an argument broke out between two students, Adi and Adil. The initial disagreement stemmed from seating arrangements but quickly escalated into a more serious conflict. The students involved seemed unable to resolve their differences amicably, which is often the case when emotions run high, particularly in crowded environments.
Aligarh, April 22, 2025, The Escalation of Conflict
What started as a minor quarrel soon attracted the attention of friends on both sides, leading to an all-out brawl on the field. The atmosphere instantly shifted from one of celebration and enjoyment to chaos, as students began to intervene, taking sides in the conflict. As fists began to fly, the spectators were gripped with fear, uprooting their chairs and fleeing the scene in a panic. In a matter of minutes, the enjoyment of the horse show had been replaced with scenes of confusion and disorder.
Police Intervention and Consequences
Upon receiving information regarding the escalating situation, police arrived promptly to bring the conflict under control. Their swift response aimed to restore order amidst the chaos, reminding the students about the consequences of such violent behavior. Fortunately, injuries were reported, with Adil sustaining significant harm during the clash. Adil, alongside a few companions, made his way to the proctor’s office shortly after the incident to file a formal complaint, marking the beginning of potential disciplinary action against those involved.
This incident at the AMU horse show serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly minor disputes can spiral into serious altercations. It underscores the importance of communication and conflict resolution, particularly within a university setting that is meant to serve as an environment for learning and development. Moving forward, it is critical for university authorities to address these tensions and implement strategies that can prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, ensuring that events like the horse show can be enjoyed safely by all participants and spectators.
Gunshots at AMU Trauma Centre Spark Outrage; Resident Doctors Launch Indefinite Strike
April 22, 2025 — Aligarh
In a deeply disturbing turn of events, gunfire erupted inside the Emergency and Trauma Centre of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH), AMU, around 7 PM on Tuesday evening. According to eyewitnesses, a group of unidentified individuals stormed the hospital premises, advancing towards the operating theatre and discharging multiple rounds. The sudden attack caused panic among medical staff, patients, and bystanders. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported among healthcare personnel.
Emergency in Chaos, Authorities Unresponsive
Despite the immediate threat, resident doctors acted with commendable restraint, prioritizing patient care and safety amid the chaos. However, their plea for security reinforcements was reportedly ignored. Allegedly, the Chief Medical Officer on duty refused to escalate the matter to the university’s Proctorial team, further aggravating the residents’ frustration.
Mounting Safety Concerns Trigger Strike
In response, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) convened an emergency General Body Meeting and subsequently declared an indefinite strike. Their demands are centered around a fundamental need: a safe working environment.
Incident Rooted in Campus Altercation
The violence is believed to have stemmed from a clash during a horse show on campus. A dispute between two students, Adi and Adil, escalated into a physical fight, prompting both to call in reinforcements. When one of the injured students, Adil, arrived at JNMCH for treatment, tensions reignited in the emergency room, ultimately resulting in a second confrontation—and gunfire.
Resident Doctors’ Demands
Dr. Sami Ahmed Khan from the Department of Radio-Diagnosis explained the residents' position:
"This was more than just an act of violence—it was a wake-up call. Doctors are being forced to choose between their duty and their safety. That’s unacceptable.”
The RDA has laid out the following urgent demands:
Deployment of Trained Security Personnel: The Association rejects the current reliance on university Proctorial teams and is calling for the immediate deployment of police or ex-military officials, similar to protocols in place at AIIMS and other premier institutions.
Immediate Installation of Security Equipment: Metal detectors and surveillance systems must be installed at all key hospital entry points within 48 hours.
Legal Action Against Offenders: All individuals involved in the attack must be apprehended and prosecuted within the same 48-hour window. The perpetrators have reportedly been identified by campus authorities.
Resignation of Key Officials: The RDA has also called for the resignation of the Proctor and Medical Superintendent, holding them morally accountable for the security lapse.
“This Is Our Breaking Point” – RDA Speaks Out
“Today’s attack wasn’t just physical—it was a blow to our dignity, our security, and our right to practice medicine without fear,” Dr. Sami said. “This strike is a call for systemic change, not just a reaction to one incident.”
He urged all departments and medical professionals to unite in solidarity—not just in protest, but in a movement toward lasting change. “No doctor should walk into work wondering if they’ll walk out alive.”
The next General Body meeting is scheduled for April 23, 2025, at 2 PM at the RDA Complex within JNMCH.
