A Historic Step Towards Responsible Leadership:

AMU Reforms & Welfare Bench Recommends Prof. Dr. Mohammad Asif as Next Hon’ble Proctor of AMU

On the evening of 9th July 2025, a landmark meeting was held by the Aligarh Muslim University Reforms and Welfare Bench of Justice, uniting its five major commission councils in a significant move to shape the future of leadership within the university.

The councils included:

  • Teachers Commission Council – Representing 1,700 distinguished AMU faculty members

  • Non-Teaching Commission Council – Representing 6,000 dedicated staff

  • Students Commission Council – Representing over 40,000 enrolled students (Dukes & Duchesses of AMU)

  • Alumni Commission Council – Comprising executive members from 108 regional countries

  • Respected Retired Club Commission Council – Involving thousands of retired teaching and non-teaching dignitaries

The meeting took place in front of the New Guest House No. 1, Syed Mehmood Road, near ABK Boys High School and beside the Teachers Colony, within the historic AMU Main Campus, Aligarh. The event was attended by retired professors, former non-teaching staff, and alumni—Old Boys and Old Girls—who proudly continue to support the university’s legacy.

Formation of Election Commission

In a progressive step to ensure democratic integrity and transparency, the AMU Reforms and Welfare Bench of Justice constituted a three-member Election Commission to oversee the selection process:

  1. Mr. Mohammad Nadeem Ansari – Former Vice President, AMU Students’ Union

  2. Mr. Arqam Khan – National Investigation Officer, India Old Boys

  3. Mr. Mohammad Shoeb Rashid Khan – Student of LLM 1st Year, Aligarh Muslim University

The five Commission Councils were invited to nominate suitable candidates for the position of Proctor. After extensive consultation, two names were shortlisted:

  1. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Asif – Department of Economics, AMU

    • Currently serving as Deputy Proctor, AMU

    • Qualification: Ph.D. in Economics

  2. Prof. Dr. Obaid Ahmad Siddiqui – Department of Anaesthesiology, JNMC, AMU

    • Former Secretary, AMU Teachers Association (AMUTA)

    • Qualification: M.D. (Anaesthesiology), Fellowship in Neurocritical Care

Voting & Results

A transparent voting process was conducted by ballot paper on 9th July 2025, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, under the supervision of the Election Commission.

The vote counting took place between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM, and was conducted with full authentication and transparency. The final results were as follows:

With a majority of 115 votes, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Asif was democratically selected as the recommended candidate for the position of Next Hon’ble Proctor of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.

This recommendation is a reflection of the Reforms and Welfare Bench’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and leadership rooted in experience and reform. It signifies a historic moment of institutional participation and collective consensus, moving the university forward in the spirit of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s visionary mission.
